How to Care for Your Yoga Mat

Your mat is made from natural materials — jute, natural tree rubber, and P.E.R. A little care goes a long way in keeping it fresh, grippy, and long-lasting.

After Every Practice

Give your mat a quick wipe down after each session. Use a clean, damp cloth or a natural mat spray to remove sweat and oils. This keeps the surface fresh and maintains grip over time.

Avoid soaking the mat or leaving it wet — natural materials like jute can absorb moisture and take longer to dry.

Deep Cleaning

For a deeper clean, mix a small amount of mild, natural soap with water. Gently wipe the surface with a damp cloth, then wipe again with a clean cloth to remove any soap residue.

Never machine wash or submerge your mat in water. This can break down the natural fibres and affect the mat’s structure and grip.

Drying Your Mat

Always air dry your mat flat or rolled loosely in a well-ventilated space. Avoid direct sunlight for extended periods, as UV exposure can degrade natural rubber over time.

Make sure your mat is completely dry before rolling it up for storage.

Storage Tips

Store your mat rolled up loosely — not folded. Folding can create creases in the natural rubber base that are difficult to reverse.

Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct heat sources. A mat bag or strap is ideal for keeping it clean between uses.

What to Avoid

To protect the natural materials in your mat, avoid the following:

  • Harsh chemical cleaners or bleach
  • Machine washing or tumble drying
  • Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight
  • Folding instead of rolling
  • Leaving it damp or wet for extended periods

Maintaining Grip Over Time

Natural jute mats can feel slightly different when new. With regular use, the surface will break in and grip will improve. If you find the surface feels slippery at first, a light mist of water before practice can help activate the grip.

Avoid using oils or oil-based products on the mat surface, as these can reduce grip and be difficult to remove from natural fibres.

When to Replace Your Mat

With proper care, a natural mat can last for years. Signs it may be time for a new one include significant thinning of the surface, loss of grip that doesn’t improve with cleaning, or visible breakdown of the rubber base.

When your mat has reached the end of its life, you can feel good knowing it won’t end up in landfill. Our mat is fully biodegradable — made from natural materials that can be returned to the earth. Simply cut it into smaller pieces and compost it, or bury it in the garden. It will naturally break down and give back to the soil it came from.

Taking care of your mat is part of taking care of your practice — and the planet.
